Scholarship Search – Begin in February and hopefully meet twice a month
College Campus Tours – This summer 2009
College Applications – This fall 2009
FAFSA Application – January 2010 (You will need your parents’ tax returns, but we can still start the process without them. If your parents prefer to do this with you, let me know, and I will give some resource materials for filling out a FAFSA.)
First meeting to begin in February, we will be going over:
• Why it’s best to do this as a group
• Our timeline
• FREE Tools to help with scholarships applications and searches
o Virtual phone number
o Internet fax
o Setup new and appropriate email address
o Utilize Google Apps: email, Calendar, Reader, Alerts
o Scholarship keyword search tips, tricks, and spreadsheets
• Ways to pay for college
o Scholarships and Grants (You should be applying for 35 scholarships a month.)
o Federal Student loans - Stafford subsidized and unsubsidized
o Private student loans (last resort)
o Credit cards (never)
• Building a personal brand and knowing who you are
o Twitter???
o Group blog???
o Create a portfolio including your biography
Most common scholarship essay questions
• What are scholarship scams and how to look for them
• CLEP (College Level Examination Program) paying a small fee to test out of a subject
Bring a laptop if you have one, otherwise we have some available computers here.
Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors are welcome to come.
